So many times in society, the elderly gets forgotten about when it comes to day to day living, rights or even getting their needs met. A number of these elderly individuals sacrifice and work their whole lives only to be forgotten about when they reach their golden years.
Thankfully, there are a number of advocacy groups who work hard to make sure that the elderly population is not looked over but rather protected against unfair laws and policies that tend to take advantage of them.
CARIE (Center for Advocacy for the Rights & Interests of the Elderly) is an advocacy group that uses it services to make sure that older adults have equal access to justice and fair treatment in society. In addition to providing such services, CARIE aims to make sure that everyone finds a resolution to their problem.
A second advocacy group is CANHR (California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform). This group focuses on how nursing homes treat and cares for the elderly. This particular group is important because there have been a number of reports that have revealed that some elderly patients were being abused while being in the care of nursing homes and their employees.
Not only does CANHR advocate for older adults it also helps to educate the elderly, the families, and their caregivers so that they are empowered to advocate for themselves. The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long Term Care is not the only advocacy group that fights for nursing home reform, a group that goes by the name Long-Term Care Ombudsman also has joined in the battle. The federal government has implemented the Older Americans Act and under this particular act it is required that each state has at least one Ombudsman Program.
The elderly community is not the only group that is in need of advocates. Migrants today in the United States need support and someone to make sure that they are treated fairly. Thanks to Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund, advocate groups are able to find funding so that they are able to assist those individuals in need.
The Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund was founded by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. Lacey and Larkin are two journalists who were unfairly treated by an arresting officer.
The officer not only treated Lacey and Larkin unfairly but he also arrested them. This was an unfortunate event but it lead to the two receiving a $3.75 million settlement which they used to start the Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund.
